In 2009, a nationwide signature campaign was initiated to demand the removal of individuals who, after abandoning their traditions and culture, converted to Christianity or Islam and were benefiting from reservations intended for Scheduled Tribes. The goal was to protect the rights of genuine tribal communities. This campaign garnered support from 2.8 million people within the tribal community. On January 18, 2010, a delegation from the Janjati Suraksha Manch presented a memorandum containing these 2.8 million signatures to the then President, Mrs. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, urging her to amend the order issued in 1950.
